Downtown Amman is defined by long, winding streets that wrap around the waists of hills. Connecting these streets are small alleyways and stairs that allow for pedestrian shortcuts. These alleyways become semi-public spaces were ownership is sometimes unclear. They provide space for display of merchandise, parking, terraces of restaurants. Enclosed on both sides by tall buildings that provide shading, these stairs and alleyways become natural places for people to linger and gather. The beautiful, organic development of Amman’s streets thus provide plenty of urban voids with great potential for public space.
